Paper 2: Arguing to Convince Due 3/2/15
In 4-6 pages, address the following (found on p. 551 in your
text): Crusius, Timothy and Carolyn Channell, eds. The Aims of
argument: A Text and Reader. 7th ed. New York, McGraw-Hill, 2011.
ISBN: 978-0-07-734379-8
Look into the gradual increase in informality in our culture,
such as the use of first names even among strangers and the
disappearance of coats and ties as regular business attire. If
manners are simply what a culture agrees to tolerate, is there any
argument to be made against agreeing to live in an informal
atmosphere? Make an argument to convince readers that this
informality is a positive move toward a more open and natural
society OR a negative move toward a decline in civility.
For this paper you will need to include two outside, scholarly
sources in addition to Janet Kinosian (Ours is a Rude Age, but
Have a Nice Day, pp. 549-551). Two outside, credible and scholarly (i.e. peer-reviewed articles
in academic journals or academic books; avoid newspapers and
newsmagazines such as
Newsweekor
Time) sources are required. Use MLA style for your
citation. Your paper should be double-spaced, with 1 margins all
around. Please number your pages.
Points will be deducted if you submit less than 4-6 full
pages (i.e. all the way to the bottom of the page), if you do not
write an
inquirypaper, or if your secondary sources are
questionable.
For this class, Wikipedia, About.com, and the like are not
acceptable sources. I do not accept newspapers, blogs, or news
magazines (such as
TIME) as scholarly sources. Online dictionaries are
fine, but they will not count toward your total number of required
sources. Look for scholarly sources written by experts and/or peer
reviewed articles.
